I am not contesting polls: Sikha Mitra after BJP fields late Somen Mitra's wife from Chowringhee

Kolkata/IBNS: In an embarrassment for the saffron party, late Congress leader Somen Mitra's wife Sikha Mitra on Thursday said she would not contest as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Chowringhee seat in the Bengal polls, minutes after her name was announced.

In a video message, Sikha Mitra said, "I am not contesting any election. I haven't even joined the BJP, forget about contesting elections. This is a lie."

Late Somen Mitra's son Rohan Mitra tweeted, "Let set the record straight! Once and for all- keep my mother out of this rubbish."

Taking a dig at the BJP, Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien tweeted, "Every time BJP announce a list of candidates for #BengalElections2021 you can make an omelette so much egg on their face."

Days ago, the BJP had faced massive revolt from its party workers who were unhappy with the candidates in some districts of the state.

The BJP workers had taken to streets to protest and also demonstrated outside the party's election office in Hastings.

The BJP on Thursday announced a fresh list of candidates for 148 more seats which will go to polls in the month of April.
