Hyderabad encounter case: Supreme Court hints at appointment of high-powered inquiry panel

New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday hinted at the appointment of a former top court judge to inquire into the alleged encounter deaths of four accused in the rape and murder of Hyderabad veterinary doctor.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde, asked the lawyer in the case to suggest name of a judge (retired) for the purpose of investigating the alleged extra-judicial killings earlier this month.

The Supreme Court also said that Justice (retired) P V Reddi declined to take up the case.

"Find out somebody", the CJI asked the petitioner-cum-lawyer, G S Mani and other counsel.

The top court decided to take up on Thursday the Public Interest Litigations seeking an independent probe into the Hyderabad encounter.

It said the judge who would inquire into the encounter matter would sit in Delhi instead of Hyderabad.

Mani and another lawyer had moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction for a Special Investigation Team or a CB-CID probe into the entire alleged encounter in Hyderabad where the police had killed four accused of allegedly gang-raping and brutally murdering a woman veterinary doctor.
