Hopeful about GST rollout by April, 2017 : Arun Jaitley

New Delhi, Aug 3 (IBNS) : Ahead of the GST debate in the Rajya Sabha, Finance Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said he is hopeful about its rollout by April 2017.

"Am hopeful of a GST rollout by April 2017," Jitley told NDTV in an interview.

“This (GST bill) economically integrates India by both Centre and States pooling in their sovereignty and instead of having multiple taxation at multiple rates, tax on tax and the cascading effect, it integrates India into one economic entity,”  Jaitley said.

“Evasion will become more difficult. It’s the step that will help the Indian economy to grow,” he added.

The Finance Minister said GST is a "major reform" "It's a proposal which eminently requires a unanimity and overwhelming consensus. Our effort has been to avoid a split as far as possible," he added.

At 2 pm on Wednesday,  the Rajya Sabha  will begin a five-hour debate on GST, the biggest tax reform since Independence, before voting on the bill.

The GST bill  amends the constitution to implement a single national tax to replace an intricate mesh of levies.
