Gujarat: Seven backward caste people attempt suicide

Ahmedabad, July 18 (IBNS): Protesting against the atrocities against them, seven dalit people, including a Congress leader, attempted suicide in Gujarat on Monday, reports said.

The state witnessed demonstrations as angry dalit men took to the streets to vent their anger.

Five people reportedly consumed pesticides in Gujarat's Gondal town and two others in Jamkandorana.

They are presently recuperating in a government hospital.

A case of arson was also reported in Rajkot, where a state transport bus was torched by angry protesters.

The incident took place after a video surface a few days ago, where four dalit men were tied and beaten up by rods and sticks by men of superior castes for alleged possession of cow skin, who also filmed their plight.

The incident snowballed after it became viral and is now a major political issue.
