German Chancellor Angela Merkel visits India
With the Chancellor's upcoming visit, India and Germany look toward deepening existing relations.
The Intergovernmental Consultations will take place on Oct 5. Chancellor Merkel will be accompanied by the Federal Ministers Frank-Walter Steinmeier (Foreign Affairs), Christian Schmidt (Food and Agriculture), Johanna Wanka (Education and Research) and Gerd Müller (Economic Cooperation and Development). Furthermore, a high-ranking business delegation will accompany the Chancellor.
Several other federal ministries will be represented by state ministers or state secretaries. The focus of the Intergovernmental Consultations will be on the areas of economy, security, vocational training, science, technology, clean energies, climate and development cooperation. The signing of a plethora of agreements is envisaged. Furthermore, regional and global issues will be discussed.
"The German Chancellor will receive the ceremonial welcome with military honours at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Chancellor Merkel will then head to Rajghat and pay her respects to Mahatma Gandhi by laying a wreath at his memorial" read an official statement.
Chancellor Merkel will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi. At the same time, the Ministers and other delegation members will be meeting their respective counterparts. After the bilateral talks, the plenary session as the core format of the Intergovernmental Consultations will take place.
Chancellor Merkel and Prime Minister Modi will close the Consultations with a joint press statement and the exchange of signed agreements.
A dialogue with the Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee, will conclude the Delhi leg of the German Chancellor's India visit. Earlier, Chancellor Merkel will have also met with Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj.
On Oct 6, the Bangalore leg of Chancellor Merkel’s visit to India begins at the innovation centre as well as the vocational training centre of German company Robert Bosch GmbH. The Chancellor will be accompanied by Prime Minister Modi.
Both leaders will then head to a business forum with German and Indian representatives. Jointly organised by NASSCOM and the Fraunhofer Institute, Chancellor Merkel and Prime Minister Modi will both give speeches at this event. Finally, the German Chancellor and the Indian Prime Minister will participate in a working lunch with high-ranking business leaders from India and Germany.
“I am convinced that the Indo-German Intergovernmental Consultations will be a resounding success. We will conclude substantial agreements that enable us to further complement our respective strengths. It will be an event, at which natural partners move even closer together,” Ambassador Martin Ney said at a press conference ahead of Chancellor Merkel’s visit.
