Four killed in Noida wall collapse

Noida/UNI: At least four people were killed and eight others rescued after a boundary wall of a Noida society in Uttar Pradesh came crashing down on Tuesday, a senior police officer said here.

Additional Police Commissioner 1 Rajneesh Verma told UNI, "Four persons died and eight others were rescued successfully in the wall collapse incident at Jal Vayu Vihar society. The rescue work has been completed on the spot."

Police sources said that the incident occurred when the drain adjacent to the boundary wall of the Sector 21 society was being cleaned.

"All the victims are said to be residents of Badaun district in the state and were working as labourers hired by the Noida Authority. The injured have been admitted to the hospital," they said.

Initial reports said that 13 people were feared buried under the debris.

"The boundary wall constructed by the Jal Vayu Vihar resident welfare association is said to be around 30 years old," police sources said.

They said that along with the Fire Department, NDRF carried out the rescue and relief operation and JCB were used to clear the debris.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the District Magistrate and senior police officers to reach the spot.

Extending his sympathies to the bereaved families, Adityanath announced a financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the victims.

He directed that the ex gratia should be provided from the calamity relief fund as he wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Governor Anandiben Patel also expressed grief over loss of lives in the incident and extended her sympathies towards the bereaved families.
