Kolkata: Shyamal Baran Roy, a senior journalist and former correspondent of the news agency PTI, died at this Salt Lake residence on Wednesday, leaving the media fraternity in Kolkata in a state of shock. He was 58 and a bachelor.

A close associate told IBNS that the veteran journalist was found lifeless in his room.

He was reportedly suffering from cancer.

Press Club, Kolkata, mourning the sudden demise of the Club's former President, said Roy was staying alone after his mother's death in February last year.

He studied in Don Bosco School, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata and Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi.

He worked in PTI for several years and took voluntary retirement some years ago. He was into book publishing and brought out some serious titles. He had a flair for writing and was an expert on various issues including religion and inter faith matters.

He was a disciple of the Ramakrishna Math. Roy as a journalist had covered the Mother Teresa founded Missionaries of Charity (MoC) for decades and had even attended the conferment of Sainthood ceremony of the late Nobel Peace Laureate in Rome.

He was known for his sombre nature and friendly behaviour. He was the President of Press Club, Kolkata during 2008-9.

Press Club, Kolkata, expressing its deep condolences to his bereaved friends, colleagues and acquaintances, announced that the Club flag will be flown at half mast on Thursday as a token of respect to its departed President.
