Former Bengal Minister Sujit Bose arrested by ED in South Dum Dum recruitment scam

Former West Bengal fire services minister Sujit Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Monday evening in connection with the alleged South Dum Dum Municipality recruitment scam.

Bose and his son Samudra Bose had been summoned earlier in the day for questioning by investigators.

Probe focused on municipality appointments

This was not the first time the central agency had called Bose in the case. The ED has been investigating alleged irregular appointments made during his tenure as Vice-Chairman of the municipality between 2010 and 2021.

According to agency sources, investigators believe large-scale questionable recruitments took place during that period.

Notices during election season

Sources said Bose had received multiple summons from the ED during the recent West Bengal Assembly Election period, including one on April 6, the day nomination papers were filed.

He had approached the Calcutta High Court seeking exemption from appearance, citing campaign commitments.

After the elections, Bose reportedly appeared before investigators at the CGO Complex on May 1.

Searches at Bose-linked premises

The ED had earlier conducted raids at establishments linked to Bose and his son as part of the investigation.

Officials claimed to have recovered documents considered relevant to the case during those search operations.

Political journey

Bose began his political career with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) before shifting to the All India Trinamool Congress in the late 1990s.

He later won the Bidhannagar Assembly constituency seat in 2011 during the landmark “Poriborton” wave that brought the Trinamool Congress to power.

Apart from politics, Bose is widely known as a key organiser of Sreebhumi Sporting Club, which hosts one of Kolkata’s most high-profile Durga Puja celebrations.

The puja made headlines in 2021 when the lighting setup of a Burj Khalifa-themed pandal drew attention over alleged interference with airport operations.

The arrest of a senior former minister is likely to intensify the political battle in West Bengal, where corruption allegations and central agency investigations have become major flashpoints between the state government and the opposition.
