Kolkata, Apr 19 (IBNS): Police on Monday midnight arrested five activists of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), including local councilor Bimal Saha, for allegedly attacking a mass meeting of apolitical organization- Akranto Amra- in Belgharia near Kolkata, reports said.

According to reports, two apolitical and human rights organizations- Akranto Amra and Amanat Surakhsha Mancha- held a rally at Deshapriya Nagar area under Belgharia Police Station limits near Kolkata. The area is under Kamarhati assembly constituency, where jailed TMC leader Madan Mitra is contesting.

In the late evening, when the mass meeting was underway, suddenly a large number TMC activists, led by TMC councilor of Kamarhati Municipality's Ward 24- Bimal Saha, attacked the rally. They vandalized stage and chairs, and, pelted stones aiming at the organizers of the rally.

Few people, including at least two journalists, were injured in the sudden attack.

A huge police force, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Paramilitary Force personnel rushed to the spot and security forces restored to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. Police booked five TMC men from the spot for creating violence.

Meanwhile, denying their involvement in the incident and demanding release of arrested party activists, TMC workers held a massive demonstration in front of Belgharia PS. The ruling party also hosted a protest rally, led by TMC MP Sougata Roy, in the area.
