Jammu/UNI: Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Dilbag Singh on Tuesday said that as many as 57 youths in the year 2017-18 went to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir on student and tourist visa but later joined militancy.

“Total 57 youths went to the other side on valid visa and documents but joined militancy of which 17 youth returned along with weapons and got killed in encounters,” Mr Singh told reporters at a press conference in Rajouri district.

He was on a day-long visit to the bordering district to review the security ahead of Independence Day especially in the wake of the elimination of two terrorists in the Thanamandi encounter.

The J&K police chief further said that 13 are still active on this side and 17 are living across, who are under constant watch of the security forces.

About the infiltration, he said that so far three to four groups, including one in Bandipora, and around three in Rajouri-Poonch sector infiltrated into this side.

He said that four militants who were killed in Bandipora had crossed over to this side through Machil and Gurez sectors while in Rajouri two militants were killed recently and there are apprehensions of the presence of two more.

“Many militants are waiting at the launch pads to infiltrate but security forces have strengthened the anti-infiltration grid both at the LoC and hinterland to foil all attempts,” he said.
