Mumbai, Nov 24 (IBNS): Former Union minister and senior Congress leader Murli Deora died of cancer in the early hours in Mumbai on Monday. He was 77.

A sitting member of the Rajya Sabha, Deora died at 3:25 am. He had reportedly been discharged from the Breach Candy hospital in the city just two days ago, reports said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “My deepest condolences to @milinddeora & the Deora family on Shri Murli Deora’s demise. May his soul rest in peace.”

Sources said Deora’s mortal remains would be kept at the Congress office in Mumbai from 12 pm to 2 pm for party workers to pay their last respects. The funeral will take place at the Chandanvadi crematorium at 3 pm.

Deora, who was an economics graduate, was the Mayor of Mumbai from 1977-78 and was later elected to the Lok Sabha four times from Mumbai South seat.

Deora held several important portfolios during his political career. He had first contested the civic elections in Mumbai in 1975.
