Ex-Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa cleared of charges in contractor suicide case

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa, who found himself in the middle of a huge controversy following allegations of corruption and an alleged role in the suicide of a contractor, has been given a clean chit by the police after an investigation in the case.

The former minister was named in the police case filed over the suicide, with the contractor accusing him of being "solely responsible" for his death in his last messages.

Santosh Patil had died by suicide on April 12 and Eshwarappa, who was suspected to have a role in the matter, was cleared due to "lack of evidence", the police said.

A report in connection with the suicide has been filed at the court of the Public Representatives.

Patil had alleged that Eshwarappa, had demanded a 40 per cent commission on the value of the contract work executed by him.

Eshwarappa had earlier said, "There is a conspiracy to malign my name. A death note allegedly has been found, it is said. But there is no signature on it and it was not found with the body."

"Can a Whatsapp message be treated as a death note. It can be typed by anybody," he had said referring to the purported message by Patil.

Eshwarappa had said he did not know who Patil was.

Following the charges, Eshwarappa resigned from his post on April 15 earlier this year.
