Former Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, 74, has died by suicide at his residence in Noida, media reports said.

His body was found on September 6, and his cremation was held on Sunday.

Police recovered a note in which Mehta reportedly cited health and mental health issues as the reason behind his decision.

Served as Delhi Chief Secretary in 2007

Mehta, a 1975-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, served in several key positions in the Delhi government during his career.

He worked under former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and also served as Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Mehta took charge as Delhi's Chief Secretary in 2007 and remained in the post for more than three years.

Key infrastructure projects during tenure

During his tenure as Chief Secretary, Mehta was associated with the execution of several major transport, power and civic infrastructure projects in the national capital.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi were also held during his tenure as the city's top bureaucrat.

Mehta's death has come as a shock to the administrative community, with tributes expected from former colleagues and officials who worked with him during his long career in public service.
