Aurangabad, Apr 25 (UNI): Retired assistant police commissioner (ACP) Riyaz Deshmukh, who worked with late ATS chief Hemant Karkare, has filed his nomination paper against BJP nominee Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur for the Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency.

In an interaction with UNI on Thursday here, Mr Deshmukh said he was in fray as an Independent candidate for the May 12 election.

"After Sadhvi filed her nomination, I made up my mind to contest against her, because I cannot see anyone maligning the image of one of the finest and most upright officers in Maharashtra," Deshmukh said, adding that the late Karkare guided him in all professional matters and always stood by him.

Sadhvi, one of the accused in Malegaon bomb blast case, has spent about nine years in jail and got a bail on health ground in 2017, he said.

Meanwhile, the Congress has fielded former MP chief minister Digvijay Singh against the Sadhavi in Bhopal.

After retiring as an ACP from Amaravati in 2016, Mr Deshmukh is settled here. He served in police force for over three decades and worked under Mr Karkare who was SP of Akola.
