Election Commission likely to announce LS poll dates today

| @indiablooms | Mar 10, 2019, at 12:35 pm

New Delhi, Mar 10 (IBNS): The Election Commission is likely to announce the dates of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections at 5 PM on Sunday, media reports said.

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections will be held simultaneously with Assembly polls in four states -- Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Odisha.

The announcement is likely to be made amid oppositions' accusations that there is a deliberate delay in the same.

The parties claimed that the Election Commission is giving more time to the government to enable last-minute announcement of welfare schemes and projects, which will cease to happen once the model code of conduct comes in the process after declaration of dates.

The Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party is seeking a second term at the power.

Polling, for 543 Lok Sabha seats, is likely to be held by the month of May.

The term of the present Lok Sabha ends on June 3.

In 2014, the NDA won 336 of the total 543 seats in Lok Sabha, with the BJP managing to get a majority on its own by winning in 282 seats.

The majority mark in the Lok Sabha polls is 272 seats.

The opposition Congress won in 44 seats last time.
