Election 2017: EC pulls up NITI Aayog for holding programmes in poll-bound states on Republic Day

New Delhi, Jan 21 (IBNS): The Election Commission (EC) has asked NITI Aayog not to hold special Gram Sabhas in panchayats on Republic Day in five poll-bound states, according to media reports.

The Government of India policy think tank was pulled up by EC for planning to hold the Gram Sabhas in the poll-bound states without seeking permission from it, media reported.

"Your office should have taken prior approval of the Commission from model code angle before before addressing a letter to district officers who are also district election officers,” the media quoted the EC as saying in its letter to NITI Aayog.

EC said the programmes may be held once the state Assembly elections are over.

The matter was brought to the notice of the EC by the Chief Electoral Officer of Goa, media reported.
