EC to decide on Samajwadi Party symbol today
According to reports, though both the rival camps, led by Mulayam Singh and his Chief Minister son Akhilesh Yadav, have been frantically trying to establish their right over the symbol, the EC coiuld freeze it in a ruling that will have potential consequences.
The poll panel is expected to take a decision by Friday afternoon on the petitions filed by the SP factions staking claim to the symbol as a bitter power struggle within the Yadav family spilled over in the open has been threatening the party's unity in the poll-bound state.
Elections to the 403-member assembly will be held in seven phases beginning February 11 and the SP is expected to face a stiff fight from the BJP and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Both factions have submitted to the EC signed affidavits from MLAs and members of the legislative council to the poll panel. UP has a bicameral legislature.
