E Ahamed passes away

New Delhi, Feb 1 (BNS): Former Union Minister E Ahamed passed away on Tuesday.

He was 78.

According to reports, he suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed while President Pranab Mukherjee was  jointly addressing both houses of the Parliament on Tuesday.

The former lawmaker was admitted to Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital where he breathed his last.

Mourning his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Saddened by the demise of Mr. E Ahamed, a veteran political leader who served the nation with great diligence. My condolences."

He said: "Mr. E Ahamed devoted significant efforts towards Kerala's progress. His role in deepening India's ties with West Asia was notable."

Modi said: "The continuous efforts of Mr. E Ahamed for the empowerment of the Muslim community will be remembered."

Union Finance Minister ArunJaitley also condoled the death of the leader.

"Condolences on the sad demise of Mr. E Ahamed, a veteran parliamentarian & former Union Minister. May the departed soul rest in peace," he posted.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri E Ahamed. A veteran parliamentarian& a valued colleague,he served his country with honour &dedication."

Ahamed  served as Minister of State for External Affairs in former PM Manmohan Singh government (2004–14).

He represented the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency of Kerala and is the National President of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
