'Don’t worry, police will drop you home if you are too drunk on Dec 31 night': Assam’s Biswanath district administration

Guwahati/IBNS: In a bid to help the boozers on the eve of New Year, the administration of Assam’s Biswanath district has taken up an initiative to drop the heavy drinkers home for which the administration has arranged separate vehicles for the purpose.

For this, the Biswanath district administration and police have opened two helpline numbers where the people who got too drunk to drive on the last night of the year can call the helpline numbers to get dropped off home.

Biswanath district Superintendent of Police (SP) Leena Doley told media that the initiative has been taken up to reduce accidents on the eve of New Year.

“Everyone has the right to celebrate on Dec 31 night. During the celebration, if anyone gets into trouble after getting drunk and can’t come back home or can’t visit one place to another, we police department have arranged vehicles with the help of district administration,” Leena Doley said.

She further said that ten vehicles have been assigned to different police stations in the district for this purpose.

“Three vehicles will be available at Biswanath police station, two vehicles each at Gohpur and Sootea police station, one each at Jinjia, Helem and Behali police station. These vehicles will be available with drivers on December 31 night,” Leena Doley said.

“Two helpline numbers have been launched for the purpose and these numbers are – 9854684760 and 9954758961,” the Biswanath district SP said.

Following the directive of Assam Chief Minister  Himanta Biswa Sarma, police, state transport department and excise department are jointly conducting a strict enforcement drive against drunk driving across the state.

A total of 486 persons have been booked by the Kamrup (Metro) district transport department and Guwahati city police so far.
