Demonetisation: Youth Congress supporters gherao BJP headquarters in Kolkata, scuffle with police

Kolkata, Dec 26 (IBNS): Activists of Indian Youth Congress engaged in a scuffle with the police force in Kolkata on Monday late afternoon, during an agitation against the Centre's decision of scrapping Rs 500/1000 rupees, reports said.

Protesting the BJP-led Central government's demonetisation move and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a large number of Indian Youth Congress members held demonstration in front of BJP's West Bengal headquarters in north Kolkata's Central Avenue area.

Protesters shouted anti-BJP slogans and burned an effigy of Narendra Modi near the BJP party office here.

When protesters tried to proceed towards BJP state office, breaking police barricades, they engaged in a scuffle with policemen there.

In the meantime, several BJP activists came out of their party office and besides starting counter-slogans, they tried to face off the Congress protesters here.

Meanwhile, when Youth Congress supporters allegedly pelted stones aiming at the cops and BJP activists, police restored to mild lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

Police also detained few protesters of the both parties from the scene and created a safe distance between the activists of BJP and Youth Congress.

Due to the hour-long demonstration, traffic on Central Avenue was partly disrupted, according to the Kolkata Traffic Police.
