Delhi: Massive storm claims nine lives

New Delhi, May 30 (IBNS) At least nine people were killed and several others were injured as a thunder storm hit the Delhi NCR region on Friday and disrupted normal life in the region, reports said.

 The storm, which struck at around 5 pm, hit road traffic, metro services and flight operations in the region.

According to reports, trees were uprooted and walls collapsed in different parts of the region due to the storm.

Power cuts have been reported from different areas in the Delhi NCR region as power lines were snapped in many areas.

"Trees uprooted near Tihar Jail in the carriageway going from Hari Nagar towards Lajwanti Chowk, from Saket Court towards BRT, on Mathura Road near Sunder Nagar Red Light, at Hari Nagar Ghanta Ghar, Preet Vihar, Madhuban Chowk, near Nala Road, on Vikas Marg, near Oberai flyover in the carriageway going towards Jakir Hussain Marg, in front of Regal Cinema, at Road no-33, Club Road, between of Raja Park and Rani Bagh, from Station Road towards Kirbi Place, causing congestion, shall be removed soon. Inconvenience regretted," the Delhi Traffic Police said in its Facebook page earlier.

At least 18 domestic and one international Delhi-bound flights were also diverted to nearby airports, reports said.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the national capital might witness  dust storm both on Saturday and Sunday.
