Delhi HC refuses to lift ban on Nirbhaya documentary

| | Mar 12, 2015, at 08:31 pm
New Delhi, Mar 12(IBNS) The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to lift the ban to broadcast 'India's daughter', the controversial documentary on the 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder.

As lawyer Vibhor Anand filed a public interest litigation seeking rollback of ban on the film, the court re-notified the matter to the next bench.

The High Court observed that the ban on the documentary is not illegal as it is applicable for the state to impose a ban in exceptional cases. It said the  ban cannot be lifted as the case is still going on in Supreme Court and airing it may influence the judicial process.

The documentary on the incident in which a 23-year-old physiotherapist was brutally gangraped by six men in a moving bas on December 16, 2012, has been  made by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin. The girl succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital about a fortnight after the incident.

The documentary  has been banned as it features the interview of one of the convicts, Mukehs Singh, who held girls more responsible than boys for rapes. However, BBC aired the film in UK.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has  issued an advisory to all television channels to not broadcast the documentary on the victim.
