Delhi diesel cabs have to convert to CNG says apex court
New Delhi, Apr 30 (IBNS) Following the adjournment of the special hearing by the Supreme Court (SC) on ways to curb pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR), diesel cabs in NCR have to convert to more bio-friendly fuel and the ban on registration of diesel vehicles also continues, media reported.
The next hearing will be on May 9.
On Saturday, the apex court held a special hearing based on pleas related to its rulings to curb pollution in the city, including pleas from major automobile manufacturers regarding the ban on registration of high-end diesel cars with engine capacity of 2000cc, according to media .
In 2015, SC had banned registration of luxury diesel cars in a bid to curb pollution in NCR. Cab operators had been asked to switch to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) from diesel.
Cab operators, who had initially said there was no technology available to convert to CNG, later requested the apex court for an extension of deadline for the conversion, according to reports.
The deadline of Mar 1 was later extended twice, first to Mar 30 and then to Apr 30.
SC has refused to extend the deadline any further and diesel cabs operating in NCR have to convert to CNG by May 1, according to reports. Only those with all-India permits are likely to get an exemption.
