India in Indo-Pacific

Declassified US report stresses on India's growing role in Indo-Pacific region

Washington: A declassified report by the outgoing Donald Trump administration has described the increasing presence of India in the Indo-Pacific region.

As per the United States Strategic Framework for the Indo-Pacific (henceforth, the Framework), it envisioned "accelerating India's rise", blocking China from establishing "illiberal spheres of influence", and maintaining "US strategic primacy" in the region, reports ANI.

The Framework speaks of the need to "align our [US] Indo-Pacific strategy with those of Australia, India and Japan", of deepening trilateral cooperation with Japan and Australia, and a quadrilateral security relationship with India, the Indian news agency reported.

The “U.S. Strategic Framework for the Indo-Pacific” (SFIP) is a crucial National Security Council product.

National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien in a memo dated January 5, 2021 said: " Beijing is increasingly pressuring Indo-Pacific nations to subordinate their freedom and sovereignty to a “common destiny” envisioned by the Chinese Communist Party. The U.S. approach is different. We seek to ensure that our allies and partners – all who share the values and aspirations of a free and open Indo-Pacific – can preserve and protect their sovereignty."

" The Framework recognizes that a free and open Indo-Pacific depends on robust American leadership. The United States has a long history of fighting back against repressive regimes on behalf of those who value freedom and openness. As the world’s largest economy, with the strongest military and a vibrant democracy, it is incumbent on the United States to lead from the front," the official further said.
