Death toll in Rajasthan bus accident rises to 32; 16-year old reportedly in driver's seat

Jaipur, Dec 23 (IBNS): The bus, which fell off the bridge in Sawai Madhopur district in Rajasthan, on Saturday, resulting in the death of 32 people, was reportedly being driven by the 16-year old bus conductor when the mishap occurred while the driver was taking a nap.

The driver and the conductor were among the dead, the media quoted the police as saying.

The bus was ferrying around 50 passengers from Lal Soth to Sawai Madhopur, about 65 km away, reported NDTV.

The 15 injured have been moved to hospitals, reports said.

The accident took place in Sawai Madhopur district's Dubi region.

According to reports, the vehicle lost balance on a bridge and fell into Banas river in Malarna Dungar area at around 7.30 am on Saturday.

President of India Ram Nath Kovind expressed his grief over the incident and tweeted, "Shocked by news of bus accident in Sawai Madhopur (Rajasthan). State authorities taking all steps to help affected passengers. Condolences to bereaved families."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Anguished by the bus accident in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur district. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. State Government is closely monitoring the situation, including rescue operations and providing all possible assistance to those affected."

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje tweeted, "Deeply pained by the accident in Dubi, I had talked to to the officers and asked them to provide assistance to all those who are affect."

Tweeted Union Minister of State for Sports, Rajyavardhan Rathore, "Extremely saddened by the bus accident in Sawai Madhopur. Thoughts and prayers with the families of victims. Hoping for a quick rescue and recovery of the injured."
