Cyclone Gaja to make landfall near Nagapattinam in Chennai tonight

Chennai, Nov 15 (IBNS): Cyclone Gaja is all set to make a landfall in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam on Thursday night.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the Cyclonic storm ‘GAJA’ over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved further west-southwestwards with a speed of 17 kmph during past six hours, intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST over Southwest Bay of Bengal,  about 320 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 300 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu).

Light rainfall has already started in Chennai.

According to IMD, the city will get moderate rains or thundershowers in some areas in the next 24 hours.

Over 30,000 rescue personnel are reportedly kept on standby by the state government.

Helicopters, Dornier aircraft and one P8I aircraft are also on standby to undertake reconnaissance, rescue and casualty evacuation, the official added.

The weather department has recommended complete suspension of fishing operations along the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining Andhra Pradesh for Nov 14 and 15.

Damage is expected in districts of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram and Karaikal district of Puducherry.
