Kolkata: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who was hospitalised on Tuesday, is currently a 'bit drowsy but arousable on commands', the hospital treating him said in its medical bulletin on Wednesday.

"He presented with drowsiness and shortness of breath. He was detected SarsCov2 positive on 18/5/2021. He is on BIPAP with 3litres of oxygen, SpO2  maintaining at 92%. He is presently a bit drowsy but arousable on commands," read a medical bulletin released by Kolkata's Woodlands Hospital.

"Blood pressure is stable, he is having a heart rate of 56/min. Urine output is satisfactory. He had some food orally last night," the hospital said.

"IL6 and CRP are showing increasing trends and he has been given loading dose of Inj Remdesvir last night. Plan to give Inj Tocilizumab if needed. Today's morning ABG showed improved oxygenation (PaO2-88). Treating doctors are on constant vigil on his health situation and will take appropriate measures from time to time," read the bulletin.

COVID-19 infected former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was on Tuesday hospitalised after his health condition worsened.

The CPI-M veteran, known for his pursuit of capitalist investment in industry-parched West Bengal, and his cultural affinity reflected in his love for cinema and literature, was the chief minister of West Bengal from November 2000 to May 2011.

He was born in 1944 in a north Kolkata Brahmin family and was related to late revolutionary poet Sukanta Bhattacharya (his father's cousin).

Bhattacharya, a man known for his clean image and spartan living like a textbook communist, studied Bengali literature at the prestigious Presidency College, Kolkata (now Presidency University), and secured his B.A. degree in Bengali (Honors).
