Tirunelveli, Oct 23 (IBNS) : A couple attempted self-immolation after afire their two little daughters at the Tirunelveli collectorate in Tamil Nadu on Monday morning, after being allegedly harassed by a money lender, media reports said.

All of them suffered serious burn injuries and were admitted to hospital.

The injured have been identified as P Isakimuthu 28, of Kasitharmam, who is a daily wage labourer, his wife I Subbulakshmi, 25, a homemaker, and their daughters I Madhi Sarvinya, 5, and Akshaya Baranika (one-and-a-half years old).

Subbulakshmi had reportedly borrowed Rs 1.45 lakh from a  money  lender T Muthulakshmi of the same locality about eight months ago. Though the family had repaid Rs 2.34 lakh, but the lender had been allegedly harassing them, demanding more.

The money lender allegedly insisted that the amount the family had paid was only for the interest while the original amount remained outstanding.

The family came to the collectorate office on Monday after being harassed by the money lender and two policemen.

There were several people and a dozen police personnel at the collectorate when the couple doused themselves and their children with fuel and set themselves and children on fire.

People, who were present there, threw sand on them to put out the fire. But by the time they extinguished the fire, all four had been completely burnt.

Police rushed the four to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital.
