Congress, state BJP slam Mamata for meeting Modi for 'party's interest'

Kolkata, Sept 18 (IBNS): Hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and described her meeting as 'fruitful', Congress state president Soumen Mitra said it is a match-fixing meeting to save ex-police commissioner Rajeev Kumar.

"It is a match-fixing meeting. The CM went to PM to save Rajeev Kumar from the CBI. Moreover, she was shouting against NRC so much in West Bengal but didn't refer to it while meeting the PM," Mitra told IBNS.

Meanwhile, state BJP unit slammed Banerjee for meeting the PM even after threatening him and said she met Modi for the sake of Trinamool and not for the welfare of the state.

"Why the CM had to meet PM after 2.5 years? She used to threaten the PM earlier.  If she really wanted to meet the Home Minister as a courtesy, then why didn't she make an appointment beforehand? This means she went to the PM not for the state's welfare but for the interest of the Trinamool," BJP leader Rahul Sinha said.

"People of West Bengal is now aware of it. Today she said NRC is not an issue in Bengal then why did she hold a public rally in Kolkata and confuse people? It is evident from her reactions that her meeting with the PM was not fruitful for her," said Sinha.

Earlier in the day, Banerjee said the issue of changing the name of West Bengal was discussed with the PM.

"He is not against it and we need to reach a stand at one point in future," she said.

"It was entirely a state government's meeting with the Centre," Banerjee said.

Mamata Banerjee said the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue of Assam was not discussed during the meeting.

"We did not discuss NRC issue," she said.

Interestingly,  Mamata Banerjee met Prime Minister Narendra Modi's wife Jasodaben at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Monday and they exchanged greetings.

Banerjee, who is considered as one of the biggest political foes of Modi and the Centre, had earlier skipped the oath-taking ceremony of the PM in May.

BJP and Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress are engaged in a bitter turf battle in West Bengal.
