Congress slams BJP over Maharashtra government formation

| @indiablooms | Nov 23, 2019, at 05:50 pm

New Delhi/UNI: Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the early morning swearing-in of Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the Congress on Saturday said that 'November 23, 2019 shall go down in the history of India as a black chapter'.

'November 23, 2019 shall go down in the history of India as a black chapter when an illegitimate government was constituted by a Governor acting as hit man on the Constitution of India at the instance of a Home Minister who considers Constitution as his captive instrument', AICC communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala charged.

While addressing the media at party headquarters, hours after the BJP has formed the government in Maharashtra with the support of NCP’s Ajit Pawar, the Congress spokesperson questioned the act of state Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

'The Governor of Maharashtra instead of protecting his constitutional duties, acted as a hitman for the Home Minister Amit Shah to sell the mandate given by people of India by auctioning the trust of the legislatures, it has become a normal for the BJP', Mr Surjewala alleged.

The Congress leader further alleged that ' in the history of Independent India, this be the only occasion when in the dead of the night, constitution was subverted, democracy was throttled and rule of law was mowed ddown by Governor to surreptitiously induct an illegitimate government of the BJP'.

Taking on the BJP and Ajit Pawar, Surjewala said that 'prior to the elections, Fadnavis and the BJP promised to send Ajit Pawar in Arthur Road jail in the Rs 72,000 crore irrigation scam, but post the elections, they have sent him to Mantralaya as Deputy Chief Minister.

'BJP and Ajit Pawar have together acted like Duryodhana and Shakuni to rip off and cheat a democratic mandate by people of Maharashtra. They have betrayed the people of Maharashtra', he stated.

Responding to a question about NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s stand, Surjewala added that the former has already cleared his stand and after his clarification there is no scope of doubt.

In an early morning development, the Governor administered the oath to Fadnavis as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and NCP rebel Ajit Pawar as the Deputy Chief Minister.

Fadnavis would have to prove majority on the floor of the House by November 30.
