Congress single largest force in Meghalaya, but govt can be anyone's game

Shillong, Mar 3 (IBNS): A closely contested fight in Meghalaya in the Assembly polls left the Congress ahead with 23 seats so far in the 60 member assembly, but are short of reaching the majority, keeping the political scenario volatile in the state with BJP hoping to stitch an alliance despite leading in only 2 seats so far.

The state is moving towards a hung assembly and BJP is expected to play the role of a game changer here.

National People's Party (NPP), on the other end, is currently leading in 18. NPP is an ally of BJP at the centre.

The party has marked a significant rise from the figure of just 2 seats in 2013.

The Congress is 5 seats behind from its 2013 number of 28 so far.

The BJP, which might play a crucial role in government formation in the upcoming days, is leading in 2 seats.

In the north-eastern state, polling for 59 out of the state's 60 assembly seats was held on Feb 27.

Speaking to media, BJP in-charge of polls in Meghalaya Nalin Kohli said: "The vote is basically against the Congress if you see the performance of other parties. Leaders will discuss if there can be possibility of a post poll alliance."

Interestingly, the Conrad Sangma-led NPP is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre, Rajasthan and Manipur. However, it fought the elections in Meghalaya on its own.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the welfare of Meghalaya is a matter of importance for his government.

"I express my gratitude to the people of Meghalaya for supporting @BJP4Meghalaya. The welfare of Meghalaya is of utmost importance for us. I appreciate the BJP Karyakartas for their continued efforts in the state to serve the people," he tweeted.

In the other two states-Tripura and Nagalaland- BJP stormed to power.

The BJP removed the Left Front government in Tripura by winning 41 seats in the state.

In Nagaland, the BJP-NDPP alliance has won 31 seats.

Naga People's Front (NPF) managed to clinch 27 seats in the Assembly.
