Congress not protectors of Karnataka people: HD Kumaraswamy

Bengaluru/IBNS: Almost putting an end to the bonhomie with Congress in Karnataka, former Chief Minister and Janata Dal Secular chief HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday made an unsparing attack on his former ally ahead of the byelection in Rajarajeshwarinagar constituency.

"These Congress people are not the protectors of the citizens of this state. They are the main culprits in that raid. Now people think of that issue... the Congress is not safe for the people of Bengaluru city. I think they will take a proper decision in this election," Kumaraswamy, who was accompanying JDS candidate V Krishnamurthy for his nomination filing, said as quoted by NDTV.

Kumaraswamy's comment came in the backdrop of the violence, which took place in August, where the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had accused the Congress members of involvement after the house of a Congress MLA was set ablaze.

The former CM's statement is not a complete surprise as both the JDS and Congress have fielded their respective candidates for the election to the seat.

After the 2018 assembly elections, which saw the BJP falling short of the majority mark, rivals Congress and JDS came together to form the government to keep the saffron party away from power.

The government had collapsed after lawmakers from both Congress and JDS rebelled and walked out, leading the two parties to accuse BJP of engineering defection.
