Chandigarh, Sep 13 (IBNS): The stand-off between the Punjab government and the state Congress party continued on Tuesday with the state police preventing senior Congress leaders from reaching the Assembly in support of the 27 party legislators who had stayed inside the Vidhan Soudha on Monday, according to media reports.

The legislators were protesting after the no-confidence motion moved by them was defeated by a voice vote on Monday.

Tweeted Congress MP, Capt. Amarinder Singh, "Our MLAs on dharna inside Assembly, demanding a discussion on 'No Confidence Motion'.SAD-BJP killing democracy!"

"Our MLAs spend the night in assembly & more were denied entry this morning. How dare Badal do this to elected reps!" he tweeted later.

On Tuesday, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal visited the protesting legislators but the meeting did not go beyond 15 minutes.

The protesters told Badal that they will not leave the assembly till Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal agrees to resume the debate to which Badal expressed his helplessness and urged them to meet the Speaker on Thursday, media reported.
