Congress leaders in UP opposed to any alliance

Lucknow, Feb 14 (UNI) The Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh are opposed to any alliances in the Lok Sabha elections and some even show their annoyance on the proposed partnership with the Mahan Dal.

The party leaders, who had a meeting with the party general secretary (east Uttar Pradesh) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressed such feelings.

Even Priyanka is of the view that the party should stand on its own feet in the state.

A senior Congress leader, who was part of the Gorakhpur delegation which met Priyanka late Wednesday night, told UNI on Thursday that they have suggested that the party should have no alliances and "turncoats" should not be given the party tickets to contest.

He said they have opposed the proposed alliance with the Mahan Dal as it would not serve any purpose.

"In 2014, Congress gave five seats to Mahan Dal, but it the gesture was not fruitful," he said, adding that similarly Om Prakash Rajbhar of the Suheldeo Bharatiya Samaj Party was groomed by the Congress but later he joined the BJP.

The Congress general secretary said focus on booth level team should be important as booth committees were crucial for wining elections.
