Congress demands removal of Arunachal Pradesh Governor

New Delhi, Jul 13 (IBNS) : Spurred by the Supreme Court verdict that reinstated the Nabam Tuki Government in Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress on Wednesday demanded the removal of Governor JP Rajkhowa for recommending President's rule in the state.

"We demand removal of JP Rajkhowa in Arunachal Pradesh," senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said at a press conference.

He said the central ministers involved in taking the decision to put Arunachal Pradesh under President's rule  "should apologize".

He also demanded a probe into the alleged tape recording of some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders with a businessman for conspiring to topple the

"I also demand an apology of the central government ministers who were part of the conspiracy to topple the government. "

"My third demand is for a probe into the alleged taped conversations of BJP leaders with a businessman," Sibal added

Hailing the court verdict, Sibal said the  day will be "written in golden words in the history of India".

"It's a great day for Indian democracy as SC upheld constitution," he said, adding  "Judiciary is the only thing which can protect our constitution".

Arunachal Pradesh had been under President's Rule since January 26 after the  Nabam Tuki-led Congress government was dismissed following  21 of its 47 lawmakers rebelled against the Chief Minister.

A five-member Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court   unanimously quashed Arunachal Pradesh Governor J.P. Rajkhowa's decision to advance the Assembly session from January 14, 2016 to December 16, 2015, describing it as "unconstitutional and illegal."

The bench, led by Justice J.S. Khehar, directed the immediate imposition of status quo ante as on December 15, 2015.

The governor had justified his action saying he believed that a "biased" Speaker would act in support of Chief Minister Tuki, even though he had lost his majority.

The leader of the dissident faction, Kalikho Pul, was sworn in as chief minister with the support of the 20 Congress rebels and 11 legislators of the BJP.
