Kolkata:West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday 'congratulated' farmers after PM Narendra Modi announced his government will repeal the three farm laws that had triggered protests since last year.

She said the farmers were not fazed by the 'cruelty' of the Bharatiya Janata Party regime.

"My heartfelt congratulations to every single farmer who fought relentlessly and were not fazed by the cruelty with which @BJP4India treated you. This is YOUR VICTORY!: the Trinamool Congress chief tweeted.

"My deepest condolences to everyone who lost their loved ones in this fight," she said.

Trinamool National Congress's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee tweeted: "More power to all our FARMERS! Their long and arduous struggle, their grit and determination against all adversities has shown
@BJP4India their true place. This is the real POWER OF DISSENT in a Democracy and I salute each and every farmer for their courage. #MyIndia."

With barely a few months left for crucial assembly elections in north India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the repeal of three controversial farm laws that had triggered massive protests by the peasants.

In a national address, Modi, the top leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said, "Today, I want to tell everyone that we have decided to repeal all three farm laws."

"We will finish the process to repeal the law in the upcoming Parliament session."
