Madurai, July 22 (UNI): A college student, who was set on fire by his mother, died at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here on Monday.
Police said P. Ajith Kumar (21), a B.Com final year of Wakf Board College at K.K. Nagar succumbed to burn injuries at the hospital.
The boy constantly demanded money from his mother P. Saroja (46) for his lavish lifestyle.
Recently, he demanded that his mother buy him a motorcycle to go to college. She obtained a loan for huge interest and bought the two-wheeler for him.
Saroja worked as a daily wager in a company and she was the sole breadwinner of the family. Her husband is sick and bed-ridden.
Despite reeling from poor financial conditions, he continuously pestered his mother for pocket money.
Angry with his behaviour, Saroja on Friday poured kerosene on Ajith when he was sleeping and set him on fire. The incident took place at their house at Kaalikaappan village here.
He was admitted to the GRH with more than 60 per cent burns.
Othakadai police, which registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) against Saroja, altered it to section 302 (murder) following his death.
