CJI Ranjan Gogoi rejects sexual harassment allegations

New Delhi, Apr 20 (IBNS): Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Saturday rejected sexual harassment allegations and even said that the judiciary is under threat, media reports said.

He said the judiciary could not be made a 'scapegoat'.

A former Supreme Court employee has alleged she was sexually harassed by the CJI.

"This is unbelievable. I don't think I should stoop low even to deny these allegations," the CJI has been quoted by NDTV.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Saturday fixed the matter to a bench for hearing the sexual harassment allegations of a former apex court staffer against the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

A bench of the top court, headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi, and also comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Sanjiv Khanna, said, another bench will hear the matter.

The apex court sat on Saturday to hear the case on a suo motu basis to certain media reports which highlighted that a woman (former assistant of the CJI) had accused the CJI of sexual harassment.

The top court heard it after Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta mentioned it and said it is a "matter of serious and great public importance".

The CJI-led bench did not pass any orders on the allegations and asked the media to show restrain to protect independence of judiciary.
