Central assistance to Maharashtra for irrigation projects

New Delhi, Apr 28 (IBNS): The Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation said on Saturday that the Union government will give assistance for completing eight major and 83 minor irrigation projects in drought prone areas of Maharashtra.

The Expenditure Finance Committee of Union Finance Ministry appraised and accepted on April 27, 2018, the  Ministry's proposal to provide assistance for completion of balance works of 83 Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) projects and eight Major/Medium Irrigation projects of Vidarbha, Marathwada and drought prone areas of rest of Maharashtra.

These projects are expected to help in addressing agrarian distress by creation of additional irrigation potential of 3.77 lakh hectares, the release said.

The estimated balance cost of these projects is Rs. 13,651.61 crore.

Maharashtra state can avail state share through NABARD loan, the release said.

The SMI projects will be completed in two years time and Major/Medium projects in phases by 2022-23, according to the release.
