Cauvery river water row: Supreme Court to hear petition on Apr 9
New Delhi, Apr 3 (IBNS): The Supreme Court will hear a petition filed against the central government for not forming the Cauvery Water Management Board on Apr 9, media reports said.
The deadline to form the board has already lapsed.
The ruling party of Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK, has been protesting over the issue for last few weeks in the parliament, stalling the proceedings in both the houses.
Chief Justice Dipak Misra-led bench told NDTV, "We understand Tamil Nadu's problem. We will see that Tamil Nadu gets water, and will solve the issue."
The AIADMK has also said it will go on a hunger strike to pressurise the central government to set up the board.
AIADMK leader M Thambidurai said the party might consider moving a no-confidence motion against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, report said.
Last month, the Supreme Court had ordered an increase in water share for Karnataka while delivering a judgement on the Cauvery river dispute.
Karnataka will get an additional 14.75 tmc of water. Hence Tamil Nadu's water share has been reduced from 192 tmc to 177.25 tmc.
The Cauvery river waters are shared by four southern states-Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The sharing of waters has been a contentious issue between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka since 1892, with the debate growing stronger in 1924 between the erstwhile Madras Presidency and Kingdom of Mysore.
The Cauvery, which flows through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, is the third largest river -- after Godavari and Krishna -- in south india and is considered the lifeline of Tamil Nadu and Southern Karnataka.
