Campaigning ends for first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Assam, 41 candidates in fray

Guwahati, Apr 9 (IBNS): Campaigning for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam ended on Tuesday evening.

Voting for the first phase polls in five Lok Sabha constituencies – Kaliabor, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Dibrugarh- in Assam will be held on Apr 11.

On the last day of election campaign, the political parties, candidates held road shows, rallies in Assam.

Actor turned politician Nagma on Tuesday had campaigned for Gaurav Gogoi, the sitting Congress MP and candidate for the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency and she also took part in a road show.

Apart from Congress, BJP held a road show at Tezpur.

Assam Finance Minister and Convenor of BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and several other BJP leaders took part in the road show and campaigned for the party candidate of Tezpur Lok Sabha seat Pallab Lochan Das.

A total of 41 candidates including two women and 12 Independents are in the fray for the five parliamentary constituencies in Assam and 9,574 polling stations have been set up for smooth conduct of elections.

There are 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam and the state will go to polls for General Elections 2019 in three phases on Apr 11, 18 and 23.

In the first phase of polls, a total of 7,60,3458 voters, with 3,86,5334 males, 3,73,7970 females and 154 voters in Third Gender category will vote from five Lok Sabha seats to elect their representative.
