Calcutta HC refuses to give permission for BJP's yatra in Bengal

Kolkata, Dec 6 (IBNS): In a major setback to the saffron brigade, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday refused to grant permission for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s 'Ganatantra Bachao Yatra (Save Democracy Yatra)', which was scheduled to be flagged off by party's national president Amit Shah from Cooch Behar in West Bengal on December 7, media reports said.

The high court ordered the yatra cannot take place till the next hearing, which will take place on January 9, 2019.

In January, the high court will consider the reports of 24 districts through which the yatra will pass.

The West Bengal government told the court that it cannot grant permission for the yatra in such a short period of time.

Meanwhile, the BJP said it will approach the division bench of the high court.

According to media reports, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court has asked the BJP to draw his attention over the matter on Friday morning.

As per the present situation, the commencement of the BJP's yatra on Friday is almost impossible.

Two other yatras of the BJP were scheduled to begin from Namkhana and Tarapith on December 9 and December 14 respectively.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present in the state on December 16 to hold a rally in north Bengal's Siliguri.
