Cabinet defers decision on gas pricing

New Delhi, June 25 (IBNS): Amid reports speculating gas price hike, the Union Cabinet met here on Wednesday where it decided to defer the decision by three months.

"The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today decided that the comprehensive discussions were necessary on the issue and the guidelines. It was decided that consultations would be held with all stakeholders and it was important to keep public interest in mind," a government statement said.

"Therefore, the CCEA has deferred this issue for a period of three months," the statement said.

This came days after rail fare was hiked by 14.2 percent.

With not even a month in office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on Friday increased railway fares with the the passenger fare being hiked by 14.2 percent.

The freight rates have been hiked by 6.5 percent.

New fares will be effective from June 25.

This is the first steep hike in Railway fares in many years.
