New Delhi, May 4 (IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said treading the path as preached by lord Buddha can save the world from wars.

"If we want freedom from yudh (war), it can be throught the marg of Buddha," he said while addressing the International Buddha Purnima Diwas celebrations here.

The function was attended among others, by  ambassadors, MPs, scholars and Buddhist monks from across the globe.

The Prime Minister said the teachings of Buddha and his life are still relevant in today's world.

"Everyone knows that 21st century is Asia's century. But without Buddha's teachings, the 21st century would not have been ours.
In times like these, where will the message of Karuna (compassion) come from? The answer lies in Buddha," he said.

"The solution to the problems which people are facing across the world lies in Buddha..In times like these, where will the message of Karuna come from? The answer lies in Buddha."" the PM said.

Modi said although the day was special, he was feeling "burdened" because of the devastating earthquake in Nepal that left thousands of people dead and many more in harrowing distress.

"The country where Lord Buddha was born is going through a tough phase...Don't know how long Nepal will have to suffer," he said.

"I would like to pay tribute to Nepal's people for facing the earthquake bravely...The ideals, principles of Buddha  can help wipe out the tears of Nepal," Modi said.

"The issues that we talk about today in India,2500 years back Buddha also talked about same things. Whether its caste system or anything good or bad, Lord Buddha was sensitive on every issue...Buddha wanted evolution, he wanted the world to be united," Modi said.
