New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Modi government's historic decision on Aug 6, 2019 to scrap special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution. A five-member bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud gave the verdict holding that Article 370 was a temporary provision to facilitate the merger of Jammu and Kashmir's with India in 1947.

On 6 August 2019, the Government of India revoked the special status, or autonomy, granted under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution to cross-border terrorism hit Jammu and Kashmir, the region that is a bone of contention between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan and over which several wars were fought between the two countries.

The top court also asked the government to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir region by Sept 2024.

The Modi government since the revocation of the special status started a massive developmental initiative in Kashmir.
