A major bridge in Kolkata's Majerhat area in southwestern part collapsed on Tuesday. Several are feared dead. There is a railway track under the bridge.

Initial TV footages captured several mangled cars. Several bodies are seen strewn at the scene of the tragedy. This is the second major bridge collapse in Kolkata after a flyover under construction in north Kolkata collapsed killing many in March 2016.

Disaster management group, fire brigade, policemen and local people have swung into rescue operation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee now touring North Bengal said she is in contact touch to get updates and provide medical relief to the victims.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted a picture of the incident and prayed for the victims.
