BJP won't take Gopal Kanda's support: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Chandigarh/IBNS: After facing heat, Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday said the party won't take the support of controversial Sirsa MLA Gopal Kanda to form the next government in Haryana.

Prasad said this while announcing that Manohar Lal Khattar has been elected as the BJP's legislative party leader and thus will become the Haryana Chief Minister for the second straight term.

When asked about Kanda, Prasad said, "The BJP is not taking any support from Gopal Kanda."

After Haryana elected a hung Assembly, with BJP falling short of six MLAs from the majority mark, the Independents had decided to support BJP form the government.

However, the saffron party had to face intense criticism after an image of Haryana Lokhit Party leader Kanda, who is reportedly accused in nine criminal cases, including rape and abatement to suicide, being flown to Delhi for negotiating with BJP top brass in Delhi, for government formation.

Also senior BJP leader Uma Bharti had warned her own party over Kanda's support.

In a series of tweets, Uma congratulated the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the BJP emerged as the single largest party in Haryana but also warned the party over Kanda.

"Gopal Kanda is the person because of whom a girl had committed suicide. The girl's mother had also committed suicide for not getting justice. As the case is sub judice, Kanda is on bail, she said.

Uma further said, "The court will only decide whether Gopal Kanda is guilty or not but winning an election doesn't make him innocent. There are a lot of factors in winning an election."

"I request the BJP not to forget the morals...." she added.

The party then dropped Kanda despite his offer of "unconditional" support.
