New Delhi/UNI: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be BJP's candidate from Assam for the Rajya Sabha bypoll, a statement from the party said on Saturday.

Sonowal is the current Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways as well as of AYUSH.

Minister of State L. Murugan will meanwhile be the party candidate for Rajya Sabha bypoll from Madhya Pradesh.

Murugan currently holds the portfolio of MoS in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and is the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Both were inducted into the Council of Ministers in the recent cabinet reshuffle that took place in July.

The Election Commission has announced bypolls on Oct 4 for one seat each in West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, and two in Tamil Nadu.
