BJP MP, playwright Girish Karnad receive death threat over Tipu Sultan row

Bengaluru, Nov 12 (IBNS) Jnanapith awardee Kannada litterateur Girish Karnad has received death threat over his pro Tipu Sultan comments, reports said.

The same has happened to BJP MP Pratap Simha, who had alleged that the Congress ruled Karnataka state was spreading hatred by celebrating Tipu Sultan's birth anniversary.

Meanwhile, Karnad, a noted theater personality have aplogised for his remarks about the Bangalore Airport rechristening. Karnad who had earlier said that the Bengaluru airport should be renamed after Tipu Sultan, have said that his intention was not to hurt anybody.

A tweet surfaced sometime earlier, stating the same fate for Karnad as MM Kalburgi. Kalburgi was shot dead in Maharashtra in August, earlier this year.

Since the threat, security at his residence have been beefed up.

The plan to celebrate Tipu's anniversary faces a strong criticism from the Rightwing groups who have called the 18th century leader a tyrant, who killed Hindus and Christians in numbers.

Opposing such claims, Karnataka Chief Minister S Siddaramaiah has called Tipu Sultan a patriot, and stated that his plan to host a celebration was justified.
