BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu, who threatened Deepika Padukone over Padmavati, resigns

Chandigarh, Nov 29 (IBNS): Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suraj Pal Amu, who threatened to behead Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali over the Padmavati row, resigned from the party post on Wednesday, media reports said.

Amu has submitted his resignation from the party's media in-charge post to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

The leader resigned from the party post after Khattar refused to meet the Karni Sena members to hold a discussion over the Padmavati issue, an incident which also irked Amu.

Amu had allegedly offered a bounty of Rs. 10 crore for the beheading  Padukone and Bhansali.

Padmavati evoked a huge controversy after several fringe groups alleged that Bhansali has distorted history in his upcoming film.

The groups even alleged that Rani Padmini, played by Padukone on screen, will be shown in a poor light in Padmavati.

Amu, however, did not stop at offering a bounty for Padukone and Bhansali's heads but also attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the row.

After Banerjee welcomed the film for screening in Kolkata, the former BJP leader said the West Bengal CM will face similar consequences like Surpanakha whose nose was cut to teach her a lesson.

Banerjee slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) indirectly for indulging the fringe groups, calling the whole situation "a super emergency".

While Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath blamed the filmmakers for the controversy, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh said distortion of history cannot be tolerated.

The Supreme Court has warned the leaders, holding important portfolios, for passing remarks over Padmavati, yet to be certified by the censor board.

Eve after the warning, Bihar government banned the film which has not even been taken up by the censor board.

The makers of Padmavati have even deferred the movie's scheduled Dec 1 release.

The film stars Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in leading roles.
